ABB UviTec BOD/COD monitoring for dairy and wastewater
The ABB UviTec AUV402 probe measures organic matter continuously using multiple wavelengths of UV LED light. Its optical measurements are correlated to BOD and COD, helping operators follow changes in organic load and composition without reagents. ABB also lists TOC and TSS as measured parameters.
Inline and submersible installation options
ABB specifies pole mounting, chain mounting and a stainless steel tri-clamp for installing the probe. The tri-clamp accessory supports mounting in line with a process pipe; pole and chain options support in-situ monitoring in tanks and open channels. Confirm the installation against the probe’s 1.03 bar (15 psi) pressure rating and water-temperature limits.
The probe includes a 10.6 m (35 ft) communication cable. A UviTec controller, mounting kit and cleaning system are sold separately. Milktronics can help select the housing, optical path, mounting and controller for your application.

ABB lists 55°C (131°F) as the absolute maximum water temperature, with reduced performance outside the recommended range. Contact Milktronics to arrange application confirmation with ABB.
Dairy application: estimated BOD/COD ranges
The following ranges come from the dairy table in ABB datasheet DS/AUV402-EN Rev. B. All ranges start at zero. BA-X models have titanium housings; BA-S models have stainless steel housings.

These are estimates from prior field data, not guaranteed ranges for every plant. ABB advises confirming model selection for site-specific conditions. Other applications have different ranges. For a more accurate TSS output, ABB recommends a dedicated TSS or turbidity sensor.
Choose a UviTec controller
- UviTec Controller AUV301: four-line backlit LCD with push-button operation. Standard connections include Modbus RS485, one 4–20 mA output, four digital inputs and four digital outputs. Additional outputs, Modbus TCP and cellular connectivity are optional.
- UviTec Controller Pro AUV302: 12.1-inch color touchscreen for multiple sensors, trend review and system configuration. Modbus TCP is standard; Modbus RTU, 4–20 mA, digital I/O and cellular connectivity are optional.
Automatic probe cleaning
The optional ABB UviTec Probe Clean system (3KXA300000U0029) uses compressed air or pressurized water, with a cleaning frequency configured for your site. ABB also offers a compressed air system where plant air is unavailable. Mounting options include pole kits, a chain mount and the tri-clamp accessory (3KXA300000U0034).
